What is anti-wrinkle treatment?

Anti-wrinkle injections are the most popular cosmetic treatment world wide. It is a rather straight forward, well tolerated procedure applied in a short application session with little to no downtime and satisfyingly quick onset of noticeable effects. The resulting fresher look will not only help to prevent from deeper wrinkle formation but is usually reported as so satisfying that most clients will make sure they get their refreshing treatment scheduled time and time again!

Anti-wrinkle injections are used predominantly to treat face, neck and décolletage. The most common areas addressed are forehead lines, crows feet and frown lines, bunny lines (to the top and side of the nasal bridge), and more advanced treatment can be applied to the neck (Nefertiti lift), the masseter muscles (to relax the muscles affected from jaw clenching and teeth grinding), lip flip of the top lip, chin and marionette lines (corner of the mouth).

At Churchill Aesthetics, we only use high quality botulinum toxin from approved Australian suppliers. Anti-wrinkle injections are prescription-only medicines (S4 drugs). They can only be legally prescribed by a doctor after a face to face consultation. In Australia, it is illegal to advertise the name of the drug or the manufacturer.

Botulinum Toxin Type A is a muscle relaxant that reduces muscle contraction in the area treated by acting on the junctions between nerves and the muscles. By relaxing the corresponding muscles, the overlying wrinkles will soften and reduce, creating a smoother, fresher and more youthful appearance.

Effects of anti-wrinkle injections with Botulinum Toxin Type A usually occur to be visible within 2-3 days but it might take up to one month for a maximum result to peak. The effects can then last up to 5 months but an average of satisfying observed outcome is closer to 3-4 months. The duration and achieved effect vary from patient to patient, area treated and volume injected. A follow up appointment and possible further treatment after 2 weeks is therefore recommended to assess and achieve the desired outcome. Due to the underlying mode of action, anti-wrinkle treatments are temporary in nature and require re-treatments to maintain ongoing results.

For the injections, a very fine needle is used, very small volumes of botulinum toxin liquid are applied and therefore, the treatment is generally well tolerated. Sometimes, there may be some discomfort to the injection site, localised redness or burning and occasionally some bruising, mild headache, nausea or flu-like symptoms after injection. These are usually temporary and resolve rather quickly. As the product is a muscle relaxant that can spread at a small radius from the injection site, it may result in some muscle weakness like temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow, swelling of the eye lid, dry eyes, numbness or pins-and-needles. To avoid such unwanted complications, we are performing a thorough assessment prior to injection to identify suitable application sites and to define the required volume of injectable needed.

When should you avoid anti-wrinkle treatment?

You must not receive botulinum toxin injections if you are suffering from illnesses of neuro-muscular basis like Myasthenia Gravis or other significant neurological disorders. Anti-wrinkle injections are not recommended in pregnant or breast-feeding patients and for clients with signs of infection to the proposed injection site. It is important to inform your practitioner about any medication you are taking, prescription medicine as well as over-the-counter, as certain medications can interfere with product used. Please let us know in case you are on any blood thinning medications like Aspirin, Pradaxa, Xarelto, Warfarin or Fish oil as this might pose a prolonged bleeding and higher bruising risk.
