What is LED light therapy?
LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode. The underlying principle of LED therapy is the use of varying wavelengths of light to trigger the skin’s natural healing processes. Initially, this was developed for more scientific use in the 1960's but soon it's wound healing capacities and benefits in human tissue growth became apparent. It is now widely used in the field of dermatology and cosmetics.
Different wavelengths of light, including blue, yellow and red, penetrate the skin at different levels of depth. This penetration can activate biological processes that help the skin to rejuvenate and heal.
Penetration of light wavelengths and possible benefits to the skin
Red light has very strong capacity to reduce skin inflammation. This is beneficial in supporting treatment for e.g. rosacea, acne, psoriasis, abrasions or burns and after certain cosmetic procedures. Red wavelengths actively stimulate the production of collagen and fibroblasts. These structures form the scaffolding in our skin to increase strength and structure. By improving skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging of skin will reduce, helping to slow down signs of aging and reduce the visibility of scars and stretch marks.
Blue LED light reduces activity in the oil-producing, sebaceous glands in the skin. This reduction and the ability to diminish the activity of certain skin bacteria has been shown to calm the signs of e.g. acne and seborrheic dermatitis over time by slowing inflammatory processes down.
Benefits of yellow light therapy include:
stimulation in collagen formation and hydration, reduction in inflammation processes e.g. in rosacea and improvement of lymphatic drainage, general skin rejuvenation and a brighter complexion.
Green light therapy can support the reduction of redness to the skin and can be beneficial in improving skin pigmentation in more shallow layers of the skin.
LED light therapy is safe and suitable for use on any body part, including the face, hands, neck, and chest. A session takes 10- 20 minutes in a relaxed atmosphere. Following treatment, no recovery time is necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and does not cause burning or pain.
Improvement in skin will not be evident immediately and multiple sessions may be necessary. After this, periodical maintenance sessions may be beneficial.
Please be mindful that the use of certain medications and topical treatments can cause sensitivity to light therapy. You should avoid using LED therapy if you are taking e.g. isotretinoin (Vit A containing medication) for acne or certain herbal supplements causing light sensitivity.
